Wow we are in New Orleans. This is a really strange city. The architecture is amazing, every house is different, old and has a story. Katrina damage is still very much in evidence is some areas.
We are in a campsite 10 miles out of the city. They have a free shuttle bus everyday at 9 am & 5 pm to go into town. We spent the first day on a city tour and a Mississippi paddlewheeler tour. Learned a lot and got a good feel for the city.
The next day we drove up the River to a couple of plantation houses. The one we toured was a Creole house and was really interesting cause the last Ceole owner wrote down her memoirs so they have a really good look into the life and times etc. Everything down here is sugar, and the air even smells sweet on the plantation. The house was built with no nails, we saw a slave cabin which was two very small rooms that housed about 8 people. The other house we just drove past. It was an american house (term the Ceoles used) and was much more palacial than the first. The live oak trees around here are very large and very old.
We are still here so there will be more to come...

Florida
Saturday, October 11-08
Still stayed around the campsite, swimming in the ocean and the pool and sleeping and reading and doing Sudoku puzzles and spider solitaire. Liz found some friends to hang with.
Sunday, October 12-08
Same as above, except Liz’s friends left. Pictures are of Liz at the southernmost point in the US, John standing in an archway in a public garden in Key West & me in the same garden.
Monday, October 13-08
Moved on down to Key West. Staying at a really nice campsite. Spent the day bicycling around the town. Hot and muggy so within 5 minutes we were soaking wet. Key West is a really interesting place. We stopped twice to look at the map and both times someone stopped and asked if we were lost. I found the area that Mom and me walked around when we were on our cruise 15 years ago. All in all we were biking for about 4 hours (which I think should count for about 8 Curves workouts!) I don’t want to sit on my bike for a couple of days.
Tuesday, Octobe
r 14- Saturday, October 18
Spent the few days in the Keys, mostly swimming. Unfortunately the weather was windy so most of the time the water was whipped up which made bad snorkeling. The swimming was great and we went from the private c
ampsites to Bahia Honda State Park where we stayed for 3 days. The beaches there were great so we spend the days beaching, cycling & Liz even did some fishing. Because it was windy the weather for us was really pleasant, really warm but the mugginess wasn’t so bad. We really enjoyed the Keys and came to appreciate their strange beauty.
After we left the Keys we spent the day at Miami Beach. We now know why it is so popular. It is lots of sand and warm water that never gets very deep. Not as wavy as our west coast but that might have been the particular day we were there. After the beach we travelled up nearer Orlando, found a movie theatre where we watched “The Duchess” (not bad) and then stayed in a Rest Stop. It was cooler and windy so I had the best sleep.
Sunday, October 19- Sunday, October 24
Checked into the Fort Wilderness Camp Ground in the Walt Disney World. We are here for a week. We have 4 days of Disney stuff and a couple of days at the Water Parks so we are doing everything Disney for the next while.
The campground is really nice. There are buses and boats to all the attractions plus it’s own programming (mostly for younger families). We are really enjoying ourselves. We went to a really great restaurant call T-Rex which, as you may guess, is everything dinosaur. We have a pterodactyl behind us...Liz is in the Ice Cave which changes colour every few minuites. They even had meteor showers once in a while. We enjoyed it, even though we were eating dinner at around 10 pm!

We ended up going to all 4 theme parks & 2 waterparks. It rained one day (the day we decided to do nothing) so all in all we really had a great time in Disney World.
PS: there are a lot more pictures of course!
Zippety doo dah is played constantly still...Disney World is so different from Disneyland cause it is spread over 4 parks so everything is bigger. The biggest surprise was Epcot, I guess we weren't expecting too much as it doesn't have the big rides, but the rides it had were informational and fun at the same time. Animal Kingdom had real animals not animatronics which I was expecting, to it was fun too. Blizzard Beach water park has a 140 ft drop slide similar to Cultas. John did that one, you have to take a chair lift to get to it. He was very proud of himself, Liz and I did this wild tube ride which left me screaming (not hard to do!)

2nd Installment

Wednesday, October 1-08
We drove all day then made our campsite in Newburgh, New York in the Hudson Valley—very pretty. In the campsite where we were staying, Liz went out for a walk after dark with the dog. She came back very excited and got us to come and see something--the biggest rat you have ever seen. We wondered if it was a small possum but it wasn’t the right colour or shape, so we are pretty sure it was a rat! She wanted to catch it. I don’t know what I would have done if she had!
Thursday, October 2-08
We stayed around the campsite in the morning just chilling out. In the afternoon we went to an outlet mall which we later discovered was the biggest and most exclusive in the area. So we found stores like Saks 5th Ave. (off 5th), Chanel, Gucci, and many other high end stores. We didn’t even feel like we could go into most of them. There were some other stores as well and John found some clothes for work and Liz found a lovely purse. Her goal was to buy a purse in New York so she found what she was looking for. I bought shoes.
Friday, October 3-08
Today we toured New York. We caught a bus tour with the KOA we were staying at. Our first stop was the Statue of Liberty. We were walking along the wharf on our way to the boat to take us to Liberty Island, when somehow I ran into a stantion, tried to recover by grabbing it and then fell on my knee—all in slow motion. I was not particularly hurt although I got a nasty bruise. When Liz stopped laughing, we continued onto the boat. The statue of Liberty is much bigger and more impressive than I had imagined. She really is quite imposing. Unfortunately since 911 they don’t let people up to the headpiece anymore. The day was lovely and cool and we had a good time taking pictures and walking around.
Next we toured Manhattan from the comfort of our bus. You really get an impression of large & busy everywhere you go. I don’t know how the bus driver maneuvered around those streets. John was really glad we didn’t try to do this ourselves. We then went up to the top of the Empire State Building. The first elevator only takes you up 80 floors so you need to take another one to the top--a worker told us that the elev
ator to the very top would be a twenty minute wait, so we elected to do the stairs—6 flights of stairs—6 flights of very long stairs—6 flights of stairs is a really lot of stairs. I was fairly out of breath by the top, but I did make it. We took the elevator down. Although it’s not as tall as the Sears tower in Chicago, I thought it was more impressive, probably because it was daytime and also because you are outside you really feel the wind.
Our last stop was Times Square. If you want to see glitz, advertisements and a lot of tacky stores that is the place to go. Liz and I both found purses (knockoffs of I don’t know what) from a street vendor for $10 each. There were a lot of good deals there. We all had a New York hot dog—good--not sure if it was because it was from New York or we were so hungry by that time.
We headed back to Newburg (where the campsite was) but after a few blocks we weren’t moving. The Lincoln Tunnel, which by the way was really impressive, was blocked due to an accident and we found out later a bomb scare, so we went the long way around, though Harlem and the Bronx which I found interesting. We arrived at the KOA 2 ½ hours behind schedule. It was a good day and we met some people and really enjoyed our guide. He is a native New Yorker so made the day an interesting one.
Saturday, October 4-08
After a sleep-in we hit the road. We stopped in Philadelphia in the afternoon to see what we could see. Drove around looking for parking and discovered street parking would work so we finally found a spot and when we got out we were right behind Independence Hall. We walked around the town, the day was sunny and warm and extremely pleasant. The buildings in the historical district are really interesting. They were small, usually 2 story, very thin with the openings into the basements directly on the sidewalks like a root cellar. Liz wasn’t feeling well that day so we didn’t stay. We headed off in the direction of Washington DC and found ourselves in downtown Baltimore because we found we couldn’t go through the tunnel with our propane. We found a campsite near the capital.
Sunday, October 5-08
We went into Washington DC earlyish in the morning. We found parking on the street that was free (John loves that
) and found we were a block and a half from the White House. All the buildings in Washington are large, not tall just large usually taking up most of the block. I overheard a Grandmother telling her granddaughter that Washington is all about the buildings--so true. We walked over to the White House (which is one of the smaller ones by the way) then decided that there was a long way between monuments so we got out our bikes and rode around. We saw the Washington Monumen
t, which is waaaaay bigger than I thought it would be; the war memorial, which was a large fountain surrounded by 50 granite stones each with a name of a state on them. I can see why Americans are proud of their country as they seem to be able to celebrate the good stuff. The Lincoln Memorial was also way bigger than I had imagined. I read the inscription of the speech he gave at his inauguration and appreciated for the first time what a great man he must have been. Wow.
So where the buildings in Philadelphia are small and compact, Washington’s are large and imposing and New York’s are all tall--quite a contrast.
Well after we had enough biking we decided to find some lunch, but as it was Sunday, most of downtown is closed so we ended up eating at Wendy’s on the way out of town. Stopped at a campsite in the middle of Virginia and did 8 loads of laundry, long overdue. Liz met some guys fishing off the dock and has a good time fishing with them. She said the turtles would take bites out of the fish as you pulled it in. She learned how to gut & clean fish from a guy from Alabama with a really strong accent w
hich she picked up and used all the next day.
Monday, October 6-08
Traveled to Savannah, GA got in really late to a State Park.
Tuesday, October 7-08
Spent the morning biking around the area. The trees are mostly large oaks that are dripping with Spanish moss. At least that’s how it looks. The moss is really quite dry. The day was really muggy and in the afternoon a system moved in. We went to the historical district of Savannah in the afternoon & evening. The rains started about 3 and it poured and poured. The weird thing is that it is so warm while it is raining; in fact it almost gets hotter. We toured the waterfront area and did some shopping. I got to see my graveyard finally (I have a thing for graveyards). The Savannah graveyard is really old; now a city park. We had dinner back at the waterfront in an old cotton warehouse.
Wednesday October 8-08
Travelled all the way to Key Largo, John was on a mission! We found the state campsite closed at dusk, it was now 10 pm so we found a weird little campsite that would take us. It was really very nice but more like a mobile home park with permanent sites than a campground.
Thursday, October 9-08
Headed over to the John Penneman Coral Reef state park soon after breakfast. Spent the day biking and snorkeling and swimming. It was really hot and humid. We were parked by a mangrove swamp which sounds really romantic till you realize that swamps support lots of life because there are lots of bugs. We had to eat dinner in the camper with the air conditioner on
full (oh, how I love air conditioners!) The highlight of the day was when a huge iguana walked into our campsite and started chopping on the grass. We got some good pictures as lizards love to pose! We started to see them all over the park when we started looking. John enjoyed the snorkeling; I’m not so good at it. But it was lovely to float in the ocean cause it is so buoyant.
Friday, October 10-08
We woke up and debated staying another night or moving on to find somewhere less buggy & less humid. Moving on won, so we travelled to Sugarloaf Key to a KOA campsite with a not bad beach and a really nice pool. We have discovered that Liz does not like the deep water in the ocean. This is the girl that wanted to catch a rat!! Spent the rest of the day floating in the pool. By the way it is a lot less buggy and a lot less humid. We are hoping for a really good wind to blow away the noseeums(sp?).
We wanted hot and we have got hot! Well our plan is to stay around the Keys for a few weeks—We’ll see…

The First Installment
Monday, September 15-08
We left home around 10:30 am, headed for the border, shopped for groceries and got as far as Winthrope, WA. We found a state campsite made dinner and bedded down.
Tuesday, September 16-08
When John got up and looked at the maps to plan our route, he freaked as how far we had to go and how little we had achieved. So we got into the travelling mode and put some miles behind us. We pulled at another state campground after a harrowing time of trying to find a campground, there are not many in Montana. The one we found could only be gotten to after travelling along a washboard gravel road. We felt like the motorhome would come unglued.
Wednesday September, 17-08
We packed up for another full day of travelling. As we were leaving, Liz, with Roxy, rode her bike along the bumpy gravel road to the highway while we waited for her in the motor home. She had a great time, Roxy never looked so tired. We have noticed that she is already losing some weight and looks more like a puppy again. Yellowstone National Park. I realized when we got to the west gate that I had forgotten to pack my bathing suit. So we headed back to the little tourist town and looked around for one. In the second store we went into--lo and behold I found a suit that fit me and was really cheap! That doesn’t happen—ever. We drove around the park looking at the sights, Paint pot trail, Old Faithful (which we waited around an hour to see) and lots of animals. Found a campsite on the east side of the park.
Thursday September 18-08
Left Yellowstone, saw a big herd of bison just on the side of the road, could almost touch them. That was spectacular. We headed for Thermopolis which we heard had the biggest hot springs in the world. Well it was a funny little town with various places where you could dip in the pools, kinda like public swimming pools. Liz and John had fun on a big waterslide that was totally enclosed and dark. John said the steam in the tube was claustrophobic, but they slid a few times while I just floated around. Found a private campsite with internet, yahoo. Internet seems to be not as easy as we expected.
Friday, September 19-08
We needed two full days of travelling to get to Chicago, so our stop was in a Rapid City, South Dakota. We shopped at Walmart to get some things to make our life a little easier, bins, coffee maker etc., I tried to. go through the self check out but because I had some big stuff (Liz’s drawers) everything got confusing and Liz & John had a great time making fun of me! We stayed in a lovely little state campground--we got the last spot at 10 pm. We forgot it was a Friday evening.
Saturday, September, 20-08
We got into the Chicago area around 3 pm and spent the next few hours looking for internet access so we could find someplace to stay near Willowcreek church. Once you get on the freeway there is no way off, it is an expressway so we ended up in the heart of the suburbs and finally found the address to the church. We found we were not far away so we looked for a campsite or a Walmart to stay in. We discovered that no one stays in Walmarts in Illinois. The only campsite we found were 50 miles out of the city. We headed to the closest one to the downtown area (we thought) and ended up in a muddy field of a campsite with drunken yahoos all around us.
Sunday, September 21-08
The next morning we realized we were way to far to go to Willowcreek We felt a little shell shocked so we headed back up north to another campsite with internet so we could regroup and do laundry
Monday, September 21-08
Downtown Chicago. We had to make a stop at a Best Buy cause Liz left her camera battery at home (in the charger). We drove around until we found parking on the street behind the Art Insitute. We had lunch at McDonalds and rode our bikes around the city park. It was really beautiful, but hot. We had to leave our parking spot after 2 hours, so again we drove around looking for a place. It is not easy finding parking in a city with a motorhome. We found parking near the planetarium which was half price after 4 and John and Liz made me walk all the way to the Sears Tower, with the promise of a taxi back. We discovered on the way that we just missed a reasonably priced boat cruise that would have taken us to the tower. On the way we found a crowd of people and reporters and learned that Obama was due to arrive. We waited about a half hour, but he still didn’t show and we were losing the light so we left. At the tower we felt like we had just enough time to get some daylight and see the sunset, but by the time we got tickets, used the bathroom and watched the mandatory video presentation it was already dusk. The lights were beautiful and it was well worth seeing but it would have been more interesting to make out the buildings around you.
We had deep dish Chicago pizza at Giordano’s and got a taxi (whew) back to the motorhome. We decided to head south to another 50 mile campsite. By the time we got there we decided that although we didn’t see all the things we wanted to it would cost another $100 just in gas & parking to get back to the downtown area, so we decided to just move on.
Tuesday, September 23-08
We met at the KOA another family of 4 (mom, 2 teenage girls & one foster baby) from Arizona that were also on the road for about 2 months. She was having problems with her motorhome so John and her had a long conversation about systems. We decided to make it a mosey day so we only travelled as far as South Haven, MI. We parked in a lovely state campground near a beautiful beach and decided to stay for 2 nights to have some down time. Got groceries, bent the bike rack backing into a tree, and tried out 3 campsites before we found one that was level enough. Got a campfire going, roasted hot dogs, now we feel like we are on holiday (it only took more than a week!)
Wednesday, September 24-08
We rode bikes, slept, read books, went to the beach. The lake was beautiful and warm. The dog got used to swimming a little.
Thursday, September 25-08
Traveled to Niagara Falls. We found a KOA near the falls & spent some time looking around.
Friday, September 26-08
Found parking near the falls downtown and toured the touristy area. Niagara Falls is a really tacky town. There are lots of wax museums and arcades, the typical gift shops. Liz bought a few things and I found a Christmas ornament. We took a trip on the Maid in the Mist and it was really cool. The falls are pretty awesome from the bottom looking up. You can really feel the power of the water current. We took lots of pictures and around dinner time we headed up to Toronto. We arrived at Greg & Leslie’s around 8 pm and they had a full dinner waiting for us. We stayed up until around 2 am talking and catching up.
Saturday, September 27-08
Leslie and Liz went thrift store shopping while Greg, John and I found a foam shop and got a piece made for the dinette bed. We visited with Kristina and the kids in the afternoon. Unfortunately Deiter was ill and unable to come. We again stayed up until 1 am talking. Liz went out dancing with some girls that she met and got back around 4 am.
Sunday, September 28-08
We slept late and then took Greg & Leslie out for brunch to Milestones in this huge mall. We didn’t go shopping cause it was just so big we couldn’t manage it. We went for a walk around G&L’s place—they have a lovely park a few streets behind their house. Liz, Greg & John went down to a fair at a church nearby and Liz met a guy that she hung around with that evening, while we talked yet again well into the evening.
Monday, September 29-08
We finally left Toronto around noon after spending most of the time looking for Liz’s cell which she later found in her boot! We just drove to Picton, ON and found a state park. The weather started to turn. After dinner we had a fire and went to bed.
Tuesday, September 30-08
We woke up to rain and windy weather. We had a slow start cause we were feeling a little shell shocked after Toronto. We drove into Picton and had coffee in a little coffee place and walked up and down main street in the rain. We then drove to Kingston along country roads to see the scenery. After finding a post office in Shoppers for Liz to mail a package to Brett, and getting my Kodoo account at Best Buy and buying a fuse at Canadian Tire we found a KOA near the town and decided to stay. Tomorrow we head to New York. We have decided that eastern Canada will have to wait for another time—too much driving and too much gas. We want warm & sand so we go south.
Well we have been on the road for 2 1/2 weeks.
What have we seen?
What have we done?
A lot of road & a lot trees & a LOT of driving.
Monday, September 15-08
We left home around 10:30 am, headed for the border, shopped for groceries and got as far as Winthrope, WA. We found a state campsite made dinner and bedded down.
